The Young Napoleon Bonaparte Studying at The Military Academy, c. 1780.
Don’t we all want to be free?
Free to pursue our passions?
Free to spend time with loved ones?
Free to live healthily, happily, and securely?
I crave sovereignty over my life. I also aspire to pursue my passion for creating honest, noble works of architecture.
However, working in the modern architectural profession often feels closer to servitude than sovereignty.
But what if there was another way?
A pathway that leads to live a life of sovereignty while also creating remarkable architectural work?
The way of the “Sovereign Architect“…
Envision a future where architects –
- Create their own visions instead of merely executing someone else’s. Acting with creative freedom and control over key project decisions—by taking financial responsibility for their projects as both architect and developer.
- Obtain great wealth and are able to financially support their families and loved ones—by retaining ownership of their ideas and intellectual property, enabling them to capture a percentage of the value created.
- Maximise their impact and take the risk of initiating their own projects—by leveraging their intellectual property using tools such as code, capital, and labor, multiplying both the upside return on good ideas and the downside risk of poor ideas.
This vision combines the immensely creative mind of an architect with the risk appetite of a real estate developer, and the skillset of a modern information-age entrepreneur.
Call it what you want—Archipreneur, Archi-Developer, or Sovereign Architect…

The Core Idea –
Inspired by John Portman, Jonathan Segal, Thomas Cubitt, and other visionary architects and developers of the past, as well as the core concepts from James Dale Davidson’s book “The Sovereign Individual“, a Sovereign Architect is someone who combines the role of architectural designer, real estate developer, and modern, information-age entrepreneur.
The term “Sovereign”, refers to someone who has personal autonomy, freedom and economic independence. Thus, a “Sovereign Architect” embodies these principles, wielding autonomy and creative liberty in their pursuits.
Anyone can become a Sovereign Architect.
Functioning as both architect and developer, a Sovereign Architect uses code, capital, and labor as forms of leverage to bring their creative vision to life – being rewarded for the value created in the process.

Step into Sovereignty –
Through this blog, I share my journey along this somewhat unusual path of becoming a Sovereign Architect.
Here, on a weekly basis, I’ll share my advice and personal experiences on topics such as starting your first self-initiated project, the essential entrepreneurial skills required by a Sovereign Architect, case studies and examples of deals, as well as insights and ideas from visionary architects, developers and entrepreneurs past and present.
I aim to show those considering giving up on architecture that there is another way. The vision and dream you had at the start of your journey are still possible.
Traditional practice isn’t the only path for an architect.
There’s another way.
The way of The Sovereign Architect.
